Healthier students foster learning and positive decision-making. Research shows that there is a connection between healthy behaviors and academic achievement. Students who refrain from unhealthy, risky behaviors have better grades, healthier eating habits, improved sleep and are more physically active. Gilmour is committed to providing students with opportunities to improve their well-being by developing healthy habits as they navigate their wellness journey.

Gilmour Academy utilizes the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model when determining programming and providing resources related to health and wellness for our students and community.

Physical Activity and Fitness

It is recommended that children get 60 minutes or more of physical activity every day. There are many health benefits to getting the recommended amount of physical activity, which support children’s overall well-being.

Sleep is just as important to your children's development and well-being as nutrition and physical activity. The amount and quality of sleep they get can affect their safety and alertness as well as their memories, moods, behavior and learning abilities. Establishing good sleep practices while your children are young will not only benefit you, but it will help them for many years to come. (Healthychildren.org, 2021)

Stress and Resilience

Everyone gets stressed now and then. Lots of students get stressed over the pressures and demands of trying to fit so many things into one day. But we have to remember that we’re not alone when it comes to dealing with stress, and that there are ways to manage and ease stressful situations. Identifying stressful situations and being able to dial down stressful feelings are important skills that can help teens for the rest of their lives (kidshealth.org, 2016)
