The Counseling Department at the Lower School addresses academic, personal and social development.
Individual and/or small group counseling when requested and deemed appropriate. It is short term, voluntary and confidential. Parental permission is obtained prior to extended individual or group counseling.
Working with students in times of trouble, such as when there has been a death or divorce in the family.
Helping to transition new students to the Lower School.
Evaluating students’ learning needs and strengths.
Social skill development: helping students show respect for the feelings of others, problem solve and choose positive options, maintain healthy relationships, or learn calming and coping skills.
Implementation of activities for the Lower School Advisory Program, to help integrate the ideals of the Student Code, the Gilmour Outcomes and the Gilmour Mission.
Working with parents to help them understand their child’s progress in school and devise strategies for success and happiness. Intervention may be initiated by either parents or counselors who then remain in close contact to address any issues that may have arisen.
