13 Seniors Inducted into Cum Laude Society

On Tuesday morning, we inducted 13 seniors into the Cum Laude Society. The organization honors scholastic achievement and recognizes students who demonstrate the society's tenets of areté (excellence), diké (justice) and timé (honor). Seniors inducted in the fall must be in the top tenth of their class and must demonstrate excellent character. Congratulations to our inductees: (back row L to R) Giana Lonardo ’22, Sabrina Gremm ’22, Samantha Fedeli ’22, Andrew Mayer ’22, Meghan Bhanoo ’22, Nina Padanilam ’22, Lauren Kastelic ’22, Grace Gainar ’22, (front row L to R) Mary Lombardo ’22, Vincent Stafford ’22, Vija Tessman ’22, Victoria Dulzer ’22 and Kaitlyn Schooley ’22.

After students received their Society pins and certificates from Mrs. Kenny, Mrs. Edmondson and Dr. Tagliaferro, they were treated to words of wisdom from Mr. Jack Bauer ’85, a professor of psychology at the University of Dayton, whose 21-page curriculum vitae includes 40 publications (including his latest book, “The Transformative Self: Personal Growth, Narrative Identify, and the Good Life”), 39 professional talks, 32 media interviews and $1.6 million in grants and awards.

Bauer expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to speak to the inductees and to celebrate their scholarship. He stated, “Your acts of scholarship are changing the course of history in real time,” and went on to explain that the hard work they have put into studying - reading and rereading, writing and rewriting, double-checking and cross-referencing - is what now allows them to think better, more adaptively, more originally and more humanely. He tied this to our school mission, stating, “In this mission statement of Gilmour Academy, we see the qualities and aims of scholarship in action.” He reminded them that this development of critical reasoning is what provides the ability to listen to all sides and to look for ways in which we might be wrong. At this time in history, these are critical skills.
