Bringing It Home

Perseveranti dabitur is a Latin phrase displayed prominently throughout the Gilmour Academy campus, which, when translated in English, means success to the one who perseveres. It serves as a guiding principle for faculty, staff and students. And to the Lancer softball team, this mantra is a cornerstone of the program, leading its players and coaches as they journey through athletics, academics and life.

The team has had its fair share of victories on the field, recently winning a North Coast League White Division championship, remaining a consistent Top of the Crop honoree in the News-Herald throughout the entire 2021 season, and compiling a winning percentage of .716 over the past five years. In the classroom, the Lancer softball program has consistently earned the distinction of being named an Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (OHSFSCA) Team Academic Award winner for earning a cumulative GPA above 3.50.

Additionally, the majority of the team’s juniors and seniors earned individual scholar honors. This past season, Gilmour recorded the third-best GPA in all of Ohio across all divisions, with a record-number 12 of its 24 players earning a 4.0 or better, and one of the team members being named the Class of 2021 valedictorian.

Furthermore, the program has remained committed to service. For the past 12 years, the program has raised money and awareness for the nonprofit organization Autism Speaks through its annual Swing for a Solution fundraiser. Coaches and players have also participated in service projects around the greater Cleveland area and as far as Honduras and New Orleans.

Now, as the program looks to the future, the hope is to build Lancer softball a home that is commensurate with the team’s dedication to not only the sport, but also to the school and its mission. The Lancer softball teams have certainly built a legacy. Now it’s time to bring it home.
