The Floyd E. Stefanski Ice Center

On Saturday, February 8, the Gilmour community gathered at the ice arena to celebrate the re-dedication and naming of the facility as The Floyd E. Stefanski Ice Center in honor and memory of Floyd Stefanski. Floyd's Gilmour ties run deep. His children, Brian ’05, Gavin ’07, Evan ’11 and Amanda ’13, attended Gilmour as did Floyd's brothers, Ben II ’56 and Marc ’72. Brian, Gavin and Evan were part of the Gilmour hockey program. The Stefanki family has generously supported Gilmour since the school was founded and was instrumental in the building and continued success of the Ice Center and the school's hockey program. The school is grateful to Floyd and his wife, Kathleen, and the entire Stefanski family for their decades of loyal support.

Floyd, a proud graduate of Shaker Heights High School, passed away in October 2018 and Saturday's Lancer Varsity hockey game vs. Shaker was played in his memory. The owner of Clearwater Pools, Floyd could often be seen sporting shorts and a Hawaiian shirt in any season. In honor of his unique fashion sense, the Lancer team wore custom jerseys with a festive "Hawaiian shirt" pattern during their 4-1 defeat of Shaker.

Prior to the game Coach John Malloy, Board of Trustees Chair Fred Botek '85 and Head of School Kathy Kenny delivered remarks in memory of Floyd and in gratitude to the Stefanskis. Fr. John Blazek '58 offered the dedication and blessing of the building and Marc Stefanski '72 spoke on behalf of the Stefanski family with touching and humorous recollections of his brother, Floyd. The family then unveiled a commemorative plaque that will have a permanent home in the lobby of the building. A smaller copy of the plaque was presented to Kathleen, Brian, Gavin, Evan and Amanda just prior to the start of the game.
