Lower School Students Advance in “Ideas for Good” Competition

During a Community Block in early March, Lower School Service Club members put their creativity and compassion into action, participating in the Diocese of Cleveland’s Ideas for Good STREAM Competition. Centered on this year’s theme, Innovating for Equity, students were challenged to design solutions that help others overcome everyday obstacles. The problem our students addressed is that holding the door like Holy Cross’s St. Andre Bessette can be challenging for our Littlest Lancers.

Focusing on how even our Littlest Lancers can extend Gilmour hospitality by opening doors for others, students developed prototypes to make holding doors easier for all. Creative ideas included the Teamwork Towel, Little Walker Stopper and Handy, Dandy Handle. Each team not only built a prototype but also crafted a 30- to 90-second pitch explaining how their idea works and who it serves. As part of the process, students sought feedback from Mr. Herten, who offered valuable insight into the needs of younger students.

The three teams then advanced to the Innovating for Equity Pitch Competition, which was held on April 25 at St. Angela Merici School.

Through the experience, the students learned that even small ideas can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
