Cross Country

Gilmour Academy was host to the oldest cross country meet in the state of Ohio this past week - the Paul Primeau Invitational. More than 1,100 runners from 34 area schools took part in the 59th edition of this meet.

In the Blue Division race, the Lancer boys went up against 14 other squads, including Division II powers Bay and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. Gilmour came away with a close third, a mere point behind second-place NDCL. The Lancers were led by the trio of Tyler Clark '19 (second), Tim Diemer '19 (fourth) and Connor Gerspacher '19 (10th), who all finished with strong kicks over the last stretch of the course. Cole Durdella '20 (31st) and Bryson Simpson '20 (49th) finished out the scoring for GA, who improved dramatically on last year's fifth-place finish. Garret Tomasek '20 (91st) and Nik Socrates '21 (97th) also ran well for the Lancers.

The Lancer girls came ready to avenge their runner-up finish from last season. In a strong Blue Division field of 14 teams, Gilmour ran away with the championship title after finishing 29 points better than the second-place team. Katie Engle '19 continued to pace the Lancers with a second-place finish and a season-best time of 19:33. Caitrina Barton '21 and Alannah Barton '19 pushed the pace throughout the course, finishing 11th and 12th respectively. Mary Lombardo '22 was the top freshman in the race, crossing the line in 16th overall, while Jorja Hlifka '20 ran one of her best races of the season to capture 19th. The other first-year Lancer runners impressed, with Madeline Martino '22 in 41st (a personal best), Mia Poliseno '22 in 46th and Ava Moe '22 in 73rd (also a personal best).

Weekend Plans: The Lancers travel to the Trumbull County Fairgrounds for the Legends of Cross Country meet. The boys race is at 10 a.m., followed by the girls race at 10:30 a.m.
