Boys Basketball

The varsity boys basketball team has gone 4-0 since Christmas, partially due to the stellar play of CJ Charleston '19. He scored at least 30 points each time in four of the last five games, breaking the program scoring record with his first basket in a recent dominating win against John F. Kennedy. Alum Dechlan Kirincic '18 held the previous scoring record with 1,260 points. Charleston now has 1,316 career points with more than half a season to play. Connor O'Toole '20 leads the team in 3-pointers made with 22, including a season-high five in a victory in the Play-by-Play Classic against John Hay. Charleston won MVP honors for that game (pictured), posting 31 points, four steals, four rebounds, and three assists. The dominant defensive play of Ian Miller '20 has brought an intensity and toughness element to the team. He leads all players in deflections, a key statistic in the Lancers' defensive scheme, with 30 on the season. Andre Rodgers '21 has contributed 29 assists so far this year, which is third-best on the team. Another recent highlight was when Anthony Bandwen '19 came off the bench against JFK and had a career high five points while showing unselfish team play and great hustle. Overall, Gilmour is 7-2 on the season with a conference record of 3-0.

The junior varsity boys basketball team is on a three-game winning streak, earning three victories in five days. The Lancers got the W against University School, Warren JFK and Lutheran East. Newcomer Matt Benisek '21 made a big splash in his home debut, leading all scorers with 18 points against US. The Lancers got major contributions from Ryan Mueller '22, as he posted back-back double-digit scoring efforts. The sophomore trio of Michael Snelling '21Vinny Bandwen '21 and Ben DeMell '21 paced the play on the defensive end in a road victory over Warren JFK.

The freshman boys basketball team won consecutive games for the first time this season, defeating University School and Lutheran East at home. Paced by the post play of Mick Hopkins '22 and strong perimeter performances by Michael DiPuccio '22Josh Bruce '22 and Nathan Flaherty '22, the Lancers now sit at 3-5 on the season. Nathan Nootbaar '22 with 18 points and Flaherty with 12 points, contributed their highest scoring output of the season against rival University School. Robert Sullivan '22, who is always assigned to defend the opponent's best offensive threat, came up with a number of big steals and rebounds at opportune times.

Weekend Plans: The Lancers are at home this Friday. The freshman team hosts Mentor at 4:15 p.m. followed by a North Coast League (NCL) double header against St. Thomas Aquinas in which the junior varsity game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. The Lancers then go on the road Saturday for a triple header at Aurora, freshman at 4:15 p.m., junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
