Junior Conducts Cancer Research at Case Western

Over the summer, Saneethi Anand '27 worked in a cancer-based biomedical research program at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities designed to enhance scientific background. She conducted hands-on research that focused on the repair protein PARP2, using Cryo-EM visualization of trinucleosomes to investigate how PARP2 detects DNA breaks and initiates repair. She also learned and applied advanced research skills, from E. coli transformation and DNA prep to chromatography, PAGE analysis and vitrification for imaging.

As the culmination of her work, she presented a research poster at the Case Western Biochemistry Department retreat, where she stood alongside graduates and postdocs and was the only high school student invited to present. Sanjeethi shared, "It was motivating, as it tested my abilities in a rigorous professional academic setting. The experience challenged me to grow as both a learner and presenter, gave me the chance to stretch my skills and confidence, and reinforced the importance of persistence and adaptability in science."
