2021-2022 LS DEI Programming Launches

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Community Block at the Lower School is a yearlong program run by Ms. Hullum to help our young students create a cultural competence mindset. The initiative began with the 2020-2021 theme We are not Colorblind, We are Color Kind, whereby students investigated new differences. Ms. Hullum introduced programming for 2021-2022 to help LS students recognize, understand, empathize with and celebrate diversity. Her efforts focus on the message that being different is what gives each person the uniqueness that God created them to have!
Students listened to a story presented by Ms. Hullum with the goal of creating empathy through compassion and connection. They also watched a video, Join the Celebracion, designed to educate them about Latinx culture and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Ms. Hullum read the book It’s OK To Be Different to the younger students (Kindergarten through Grade 2) and Just Ask to the older students (Grades 3-6) and then engaged the students in discussions about differences. All students then got pom poms and learned to SAMBA SHAKE!
