Joe Pahoresky ’21 became involved in scouting when he joined Boy Scouts at age 11. During the last weekend of March, he was recognized at a special ceremony as having earned the Eagle Scout rank, a feat achieved by less than 6 percent of all scouts. 

In order to attain that rank, among other things, Joe had to plan, develop and lead a service project. Over the course of 15 months, which involved Joe having to pivot and adjust his plans multiple times due to the pandemic, construction on campus, shipping delays and more, Joe worked on his Eagle Project - installing a weather station and observation pavilion on Gilmour’s campus. The project was completed over a three-day span this past August. The structure, located next to the greenhouse, collects local longitudinal data that can be accessed by anyone at Gilmour for classroom use, reports, studies, etc.

Third graders came to the station as part of their unit on weather and were able to take their own measurements with thermometers, anemometers, compasses and a rain gauge in the garden. They then compared their findings with those of the weather station.

Joe will head to Purdue University this fall, where he will major in mechanical engineering and minor in computer science and philosophy. He plans to use the philosophy minor to ultimately focus on ethics in engineering. At Purdue, Joe will be participating in a Global Engineering Learning Community, which will allow him to learn about how engineering can affect other countries and how other cultures look at engineering.
