What a great start to the girls prep hockey season as the Lancers officially began competition this past weekend with a three-game home series, winning all three games. The season began with a 2-0 victory against the Rochester Edge 19U. Defensemen Quinn Hartmetz '21 scored her first Lancer career goal on a power play with 7:29 left in the first period on an assist by Morgan Miller '19and Shannon Traynor '20. Less than five minutes later, Miller scored her first goal of the season to put GA up 2-0 to end the period. Traynor was named Hard Hat Player of the Game for playing an all-around solid game.
In game two, also against the Edge later that same day, it was an exciting matchup. Rochester scored first and ended the first period with a 1-0 lead. Gilmour came out strong to open the second period with an early goal from Traynor on an assist from Miller. Two minutes later, Jenna Salminen '20 scored an an assist by Gretchen Klens '19 to put the Lancers up by one. Rochester answered with a late goal to end the period tied at two. In the final period, Rochester took the lead midway through before Abby Zenone '18 sniped a goal from below the goal line, tying it up before then teeing up Miller to get the game-winning goal 30 seconds later. The Hard Hat Player of the Game Award went to Zenone for her clutch goal that allowed the team to rally and finish strong.
The final game of the weekend was against Steel City Selects. Ruby McCall '19 recorded her first goal as a Lancer, assisted by Maura McKeown '19, to open the door for the Gilmour offensive attack. Less than 30 seconds later, Salminen scored with an assist from Jasmiina Vaatainen '19. Gilmour proceeded to score eight more unanswered goals to go on to win the game 10-0. Klens recorded a hat trick with the additional goals by Ellie Heller '19 (2), Zenone (2) and McKeown. Assists came from Heller, McKeown, Traynor, Salminen. Goalie Julia Beaven '19 earned the shutout in net.
Special shoutouts went to Gretchen Klens for her hatty, Ellie Heller for two goals and an assist, Ruby McCall for her first goal as a Lancer and toJulia Beaven for her shutout performance.
Weekend Plans - The Lancers head North to Ontario to compete in the Ridley College exhibition series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
