Learning About the World Through Language

Gilmour’s Foreign Language Week invited students to experience the beauty of global cultures through this year’s theme, “Where Language Meets Art.” Throughout the week, students explored how language connects people, traditions and creative expression across the world.

The Foreign Language Department hosted a wide range of engaging activities that brought the theme to life. A student-favorite international café featured treats like quesitos, pain au chocolat, madeleines and cannoli. Students also participated in advisory activities, a poster contest, and enjoyed special lunch offerings inspired by cuisines from around the globe.

Additional highlights included henna tattooing, salsa lessons during Community Block, and a visit from Lower School Spanish students, creating meaningful cross-divisional connections. Each day at Convocation, the Student Prayer was shared in a different language, reinforcing the global perspective at the heart of the week.
Through these experiences, students were reminded that learning a language is about more than vocabulary — it’s about understanding the world and the people in it.
