Varsity B Hockey Wins JV State Championship

Congratulations to the Varsity B Hockey team, which won the JV state championship on Sunday, February 25!

The Lancers went 2-1 in pool play defeating Holy Name 6-0 and Olentangy Liberty 2-0. The team lost to St. John School out of Toledo 4-3. With that record, Gilmour advanced to the semifinals against University School.

The Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by John Kohanski '21, Tate Simpson '21 and Joe Roddy '21. US controlled the second period and scored two goals to make it 3-2, but that would be all the scoring for the rivals as goalie Dylan Stefan '21 and the rest of the Lancers closed the door on US in the third.

In the championship game against Liberty, Frankie Valenti '21 scored just under five minutes into the game on a pass from Roddy to put the Lancers up 1-0. Liberty tied it up three minutes later before Justin Evans '20 scored to make it 2-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the first period.

GA would add two more goals in the second period. Matt Roddy '18 scored a power-play goal with 6:19 remaining that would end up standing as the game-winning goal. Valenti and Jack Starr '21 added the assists. The Lancers then made it 4-1 at the 3:26 mark as Kohanski scored, assisted by Evans and Simpson.

Liberty opened the scoring in the third period to pull within 4-2 with 11:22 remaining. The Lancers would control most of the third period. When Liberty pulled its goalie to gain an extra attacker, Andrew Golden '20 sealed the game with an empty-net goal assisted by Starr with 1:42 remaining. Stefan stopped 17-of-19 shots he faced to earn his fourth win of the weekend in as many starts. This is the Gilmour hockey program's first state championship at any level.
