First Semester Catalyst Participants Share Their Findings

This past semester, Quiyao Liang '18 and Clayton Tomasek '18 participated in the Catalyst program and worked alongside researchers at Case Western Reserve University. They recently presented summaries of their projects to faculty/staff, their mentors, parents and guests. Their projects are detailed below and photos of their presentations can be viewed here.

Manipulation of Magnetic Vortex and Study of its Dynamics Under Magnetic Stress by Qiyao Liang '18
Because magnetic vortex can be used to swiftly control electron spins, it has the potential application for quantum info technology and as sensitive magnetic sensors at room temperature. Qiyao worked in the department of physics at CWRU with Dr. Jesse Berezovsky’s team to study dynamics of magnetic vortex and its core reversal.

Optimizing Touch Sensors On Worm Robots by Clayton Tomasek '18
Worm-like robots are gaining popularity due to their usefulness in exploring tunnels and in medical application. Sensory input from surroundings allows these robots to navigate their environment. Clayton worked with Dr. Roger Quinn and his team in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at CWRU to optimize design for a touch sensor on a soft body robot.
