Freshman Publishes Single-Author Paper in Research Journal
Only a freshman, Asya Akkus ’21 just published her first single-author paper! Her work appeared in October in the International Journal of Current Research, an open access, peer-reviewed online journal. Her paper examines the ways in which dentistry can be efficiently integrated with the general health care system to improve quality of care and save costs. She has always been interested in the financial aspects of healthcare and medicine and, after sampling several finance and economics courses via Coursera and Case Western Reserve University, she came up with this topic idea.
Akkus spent the entire summer and the first part of this semester working on the manuscript and getting it published. She used CWRU’s library to access the scientific databases. The paper was blind peer reviewed by three reviewers and will be referenced in the PubMed database, a free search engine accessing references and abstracts on life sciences and medical topics.
Akkus has been involved in two other papers as part of a research team, but this is her first (and we’re sure not her last!) single-author paper.
She said that Mr. Klein’s physics course “brought home the scientific method and the analytical tools used in scientific inquiry.” Additionally, she cited Dr. Goel’s dedication and organization as inspiring her to persevere after her article was initially rejected.
Asked what having this article published means to her, Akkus said, “It shows that even an intern can make a difference in the scientific/managerial community, however small.”
Akkus hopes to one day be the CEO of a hospital after obtaining her MD and MBA.
