Varsity Girls' Basketball Head Coach Named

We are thrilled to announce our new varsity girls’ basketball head coach, John Curran. John served as the assistant varsity basketball coach at Magnificat High School from 2010-2016, where he helped lead the team to an overall record of 120-26 and five straight district championships. He has coached numerous student-athletes who went on to play at the Division I and Division III college levels and was involved in every aspect of the game – scouting, strength and conditioning, practice/game planning and execution.
 
John is a graduate of Saint Edward High School and Cornell University, and has a graduate degree from Case Western Reserve University. In 2015, John was awarded the Saint Edward High School Alumnus of the Year Award. At Cornell, John was a Meinig National Scholar, a member of the Sphinx Head Honorary Society, and the recipient of the Victor Grohmann Award for the Outstanding Student-Athlete at Cornell.
 
He is the founder and managing partner of Next Play Partners, LLC, a financial services and consulting firm, and has more than 30 years of experience in the financial industry, including senior positions at McDonald & Company, KeyBank Capital Markets and Wells Fargo Advisors. John enjoys mentoring his former players and connecting them with business opportunities locally and nationally.
 
John understands the importance of and embraces our Holy Cross mission. He has served on the Board of Trustees at St. Edward High School since 1988 and served as Chairman from 1995-2003. He and his family are active members of St. Raphael parish. He and his wife, Nina, who recently passed away, have three children – John, Brian and Meghan.
 
John is excited to announce that Pete Carroll and Katie Berry will join him as assistant coaches on his coaching staff. John and his staff bring years of coaching experience coupled with deep ties within the high school basketball community and solid relationships with college basketball coaches.
 
Pete Carroll served as the assistant men’s basketball coach at CWRU from 2004-2006, where he was active in practice planning, game plan development, recruiting, scouting, alumni relations, and skill development of perimeter players. Pete has worked basketball camps at the University of Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin, Purdue University and Five Star Basketball.
 
While coaching at CWRU, Pete earned his MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management and then transitioned into the financial services field, where he has worked for the last 11 years. In his free time, he is actively involved at Saint Martin de Porres High School, and serves on the school’s advancement committee. Pete and his wife, Marsi, live in Bay Village.
 
Katie Berry began coaching immediately after finishing her basketball career at Walsh University. She served as an assistant coach at Walsh University for the 2011-2012 season before returning to her high school alma mater, St. Joseph Academy. She spent three seasons there as a junior varsity and assistant varsity coach. Last season, she moved to Trinity High School, where she served as an assistant varsity coach.
 
During her tenure as a player at Walsh University, Katie earned Third Team All-American honors her senior season and First Team All-AMC honors three years in a row, as well as starting 125 of her last 126 games. Katie’s jersey is on display in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Ring of Honor in recognition of her outstanding play during the 2010-2011 basketball season.
