Budding Politicians Head to D.C.

A group of Constitutional Law and AP Government students are back on campus after a whirlwind tour of D.C. earlier this week. The group was led by Mr. Lindley, who was assisted by Ms. Fidanza. First stop on Monday was the National Archives, where they were able to see our founding documents – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. From there, visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History and capped off the day with a 2 ½-hour walking tour of the Mall and the monuments.

Tuesday, the group was up bright and early and began the day at the Supreme Court, where they sat in on oral arguments. From there, it was off to the Newseum, where the students were able to see everything from the Unibomber’s cabin to artifacts from 9/11 and the D.C. sniper case to Lady Gaga’s famous “meat dress.” That afternoon, they were able to meet with Congressman Dave Joyce, who answered all sorts of questions about the life of a politician. With all of Washington gearing up for that night’s State of the Union address, the group saw many motorcades heading toward Capitol Hill, including the vice president’s!

On Wednesday morning, the students attended Senator Rob Portman’s constituent coffee and were able to spend a few minutes talking with the Senator, courtesy of his legislative aide,
Jack Dolan ’11. In his role, he is helping to write healthcare legislation for the Senator. Jack took the group from the Senate Office Building to Capitol Hill for a tour (they bumped into Senator Tim Kaine on the shuttle ride over!). He also provided the group gallery passes to the Senate, where they were able to listen to fellow Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown speak before the Senate voted on Ben Carson’s nomination as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This annual trip is made possible through the generosity of Mr. Frank Potenziani and the M&T Trust.
