Freshman Represents University Hospitals’ Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Brendan Hearns '26 came home after a lacrosse game last spring and laid on the floor in agony. His parents took him to a local emergency room, and were shocked when the caregivers said their son needed to be treated at a pediatric trauma center.
Brendan’s pancreas was severely injured when an opponent’s lacrosse stick pushed up against his abdomen crushing his pancreas against his spine. Just hours after the game, Brendan was in surgery at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
The operation was led by Dr. Michael Dingeldein, director of pediatric trauma at UH Rainbow. Thankfully, and with much determination and grit, Brendan made a full recovery and is back on the lacrosse field!
Brendan and his parents recently visited D.C. to share their story, and advocate for greater access to trauma centers at the TCAA - Trauma Center Association of America 2023 Lobby Day. Joining Brendan in DC were Dr. Dingeldein and Heidi Gartland, chief government and community relations officer at UH.
May is Trauma Awareness Month.
