Kyle Maggard '06 Gives Impassioned Speech To Cum Laude Society Inductees

At the Spring Cum Laude induction ceremony, guests were treated to remarks from Kyle Maggard ’06. After graduating from Gilmour, Kyle played junior hockey for two years before attending West Point, where, in addition to playing hockey, he finished in the top 5 percent of his class and earned a bachelor of science in engineering management. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in engineering from Cambridge University. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Liberia to help with the ebola epidemic.

After completing his service with the Army, Kyle began work on his MBA at Harvard University while launching a company called Over Easy, which produces healthy breakfast bars. The bars are now available at stores nationwide, and Kyle has taken a leave from Harvard as he focuses on his business with his wife, Ashley Hanson Maggard ’08, and two young sons.

During his remarks, Kyle shared four lessons he has learned during his time as an athlete, in the military, and now, as an entrepreneur. He congratulated the inductees on all they have accomplished to date and encouraged them to:
  • find what inspires them
  • travel every chance they get and never stop being a student
  • embrace failure and all they can learn from it
  • have fun and bring others along for the ride.

He reminded the inductees that the thing that excited him most about speaking to them is that, despite all they have already accomplished, there is so much that lies ahead. He shared that looking at them, he sees leaders who will change the world, who will bring about a more humane and just society.
