College 101

On Thursday, the seniors attended a presentation called College 101 to help prepare them for college life. Parents were invited to view the presentation via livestream. The program, sponsored by the Gilmour Women’s Club and part of Student Awareness Week, allowed seniors to learn valuable information from professionals on topics such as legal rights and responsibilities, financial planning, campus safety and mental health.

Attorney Fred Carmen, executive vice president and general counsel for Millennium Management, spoke about the legal rights and responsibilities that come with turning 18. Aaron Vaughn, a financial planner with more than 20 years of experience shared tips on how to manage your finances during college. You can check out his presentation here. Ross Carbone ’95, Deputy Chief of Security for John Carroll University’s police department, presented on campus safety. Finally, Elaine Myers, from LifeAct, talked to students about how to recognize depression and suicide warning signs and how to access help for themselves or their peers.

The presentations were full of essential information for the seniors before they embark on an experience outside of Gilmour in a few months. We encourage you to talk to your child about the presentation and share some of the information they learned.
