Holocaust Literature Students Create Live Exhibit for Gilmour Community

This week, students and faculty had the opportunity to visit an educational exhibit on The Holocaust, set up by Dr. Menkhaus’ Holocaust Literature students. The exhibit was the students’ final project for the course. It was set up in the Atrium in the Classroom Building, and was designed so that participants could tour it on their own, listening to a 15-minute audio file as they advanced through the gallery.

Throughout the semester, students worked in pairs or individually, researching a topic of their choosing. Then then created a 1-2-minute recorded description of the topic, along with a visual component. Topics included anti-semitism, the Jewish ghettos, the camps, experimentation, deaths in the countryside, the Nazi attempt to cover up their crimes and hate crimes today. The recordings were compiled to create the audio file for participants to listen to as they viewed the displays.

After learning from the exhibit, participants were asked to sign a pledge to stand against hate crimes of all kinds. One of the goals of the class and of Holocaust/genocide studies is to educate others about what happened so that genocide does not happen in the future. This exhibit allowed the Gilmour community to learn from the students who took the Holocaust Literature elective this semester, about the results of hatred and marginalization. Check out these photos from the exhibit.
