WSTEM Uses Community Block for Inside Look at Field of Bioengineering

Rylyn Anderson ’23
WSTEM had the pleasure of visiting the Norman Noble Microprecision Medtech Manufacturing facility during our Community Block. Norman Noble manufactures medical implants and devices that require the collaboration of many departments - laser, cleaning, electropolishing, swiss milling and surface finishing. Donned in our plastic protective eyewear and no cell phones, we were escorted by Sarah Pickens, a mechanical engineer, through these stations. As we toured, we saw the production of a variety of stents, suture closers and tibial nails for shattered femurs. We also had the opportunity to see an innovative piece of equipment, which not only took an MRI, but provided immediate radiation treatment for cancer patients, allowing the patient to receive the needed medical treatment on the spot. Not only were we able to see this, but also we viewed the technicians engaged in production and the engineers thinking behind the scenes. A special thanks to Kim Domen, GA parent and engineering technician, who helped orchestrate our visit to Norman Noble and arranged to show WSTEM the applications of emerging devices and an amazing industry.
