Founders’ Week Reminds Us of Our Roots

This week on campus, students and faculty celebrated our Holy Cross roots and remembered those who came before us, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross Blessed Basil Moreau, as well as the founders of Gilmour.

Embracing our Gilmour mission, the week kicked off with a Gilmour Gives Dress-Down Day on Monday to raise awareness and resources (school supplies and monetary donations) for those in need in our community. The Students for Students Club collected the donations and will deliver school supplies to local school children.

From Monday through Wednesday, the entire Gilmour community participated in the building of our Inclusiveness Canopy near St. Mary’s Lake. Each member of the student body as well as the faculty/staff members wrapped string around poles with identifiers that resonated with them. Examples of these identifiers included “I feel strongly connected with my heritage (culture),” “I am passionate about the arts,” “I have lost a loved one,” “I was born outside of Ohio,” among others. Our community’s similarities and differences are what allowed this project to move from empty poles in the ground to a beautiful, colorful canopy. It showed that each member of the community is distinct, but connected. Working with the students as they strung their string, Mrs. Daly said, “The string tells your story, the canopy depicts the GA story.

The celebration culminated Thursday with the Our Lady of Sorrows All-School Mass to celebrate the Congregation of Holy Cross’ feast day. The community gathered in Weber Stadium for an outdoor Mass.

After Mass, the Lower School students did their part to live the school mission. They spent a portion of the afternoon creating Blessing Bags full of goodies for children staying at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. They also enjoyed participating in a Gilmour Seal Scavenger Hunt around the Lower School.
