Brian Poe ’05

Brian Poe ’05 has been living by that adage since his days on the Gilmour golf team. He has always believed that remaining focused on the present “shot,” or task at hand, will lead to the best long-term success. He employed it in the classroom as well as in his work with the Mock Trial team.

After Gilmour, Brian went to Bucknell University, where he was a captain of the golf team and majored in economics and sociology with a minor in mathematics. After Bucknell, he worked for a law firm in California for a year prior to attending Brooklyn Law School. While focusing on entertainment law in school, he interned at IMG and Sony Music and also worked part-time for a former U.S. District Judge. He later went on to practice law for five years in the field of alternative dispute resolution, focusing primarily on the mediation of complex cases at Phillips ADR. He then transitioned out of the legal field to work at IMG in their Golf Clients division. He has now worked at IMG for almost three years and represents several professional golfers.

Brian loves his job and particularly enjoys the fact that no two days are the same. He likes that he has the opportunity to tackle fresh challenges and learn new things on a daily basis. He also enjoys that, as an agent, he travels quite a bit and meets a lot of interesting people.

Reflecting on his time at Gilmour, Brian said that he believes his involvement in Mock Trial shaped his career ambitions. He noted the number of opportunities he had at his fingertips as a student and enjoyed the exposure to a wide array of studies and the ability to pursue what interested him. “However,” he said, “my favorite thing about Gilmour will always be the people.” He continued, “From the students to the faculty, I was fortunate to be exposed to so many great people at such a young age. The Gilmour family remains a close-knit group and one that I am proud to be a part of.”

There were three teachers, in particular, that left a lasting impact on Brian. He said, “Mr. McCamley taught me to write a meaningful paragraph; Mr. Grejtak showed me that learning could be fun; and Mrs. Kenny successfully guided me through my senior year.” He noted that he continues to embrace the notion of being a “lifelong learner” and credits it to his exceptional teachers.

Looking to the future, Brian says that because of his educational foundation and prior experience, he is not afraid to take chances and explore new opportunities as they present themselves. He believes he has set himself up with a solid foundation for success. He finished by saying, “While I certainly set specific goals for myself, I like to keep an open mind as to where and how to execute them.”

One shot at time seems to be a proven formula for you, Brian!
