Public Speaking at Gilmour Leads To Career in Strategic Communications

Nikki Hollis '14 says that her days at Gilmour instilled in her the ability to comfortably and confidently present in front of others. As a result, when she got to college, a communications major seemed like the logical next step. Her interest in public relations and marketing allowed her to specify her major further to strategic communications.

Nikki graduated from Ohio State this past May and, just a few weeks later, began at ESPN Cleveland as an Executive Assistant, which provides its audience the opportunity to engage in Cleveland sports through ESPN.com and ESPN 850 WKNR, the home of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes. In her role there, she is responsible for assisting the vice president, providing marketing consulting and helping with team administration and daily operations.

Nikki says that “every teacher I had in my four years at Gilmour played a part in my overall success.” But, one in particular stands out. She credits Mrs. Edmondson, her advisor for three years and English teacher twice, for helping her discover her strengths. She said, “She would always push me to go beyond being simply average because she knew if I put the extra effort in and applied myself that my true talent would show.”

The Gilmour ties run deep in the Hollis family. Nikki’s dad, John '83, and four brothers - Tom '13, Justin '16, John '18 and Joe '20 - are Lancers as well. She said, “Having attended a school that not only all four of my brothers have, but also my father, was always something that meant a lot to me.” She says that her Gilmour friendships are some of the strongest to this day and that her favorite memories have to be watching her brothers play basketball, which she’ll get to do for two more seasons until the last Hollis graduates!
