Middle School Students Spend Afternoon Engaged in Service

Last Wednesday, Gilmour Middle School students engaged in an afternoon of service excursions.

Seventh-grade students, whose service theme this year is ministry to children, journeyed to the Lower School and teamed up with their first- and second-grade prayer buddies to learn about the importance of compassionate service and to work together to make fleece blankets for Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Eighth-grade students ventured to Malachi House and Malachi Hunger Center for an Urban Plunge educational experience that set the groundwork for their service theme of ministry to the elderly. The students learned about how Malachi House Hospice ministers to individuals who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and who are in need of special home care in the final stages of life.  They toured Malachi Center and learned about programs for most vulnerable residents of Cleveland’s near west side – the homeless, low-income families and their children.

These encounters enabled our students to experience solidarity with one another and with the Gilmour Holy Cross mission, and enabled them to experience the call to serve others in the greater community according to the Catholic Corporal Works of Mercy.
