Science Sets Sail at Gilmour Academy in Annual Boat Float

The Boat Float is an annual favorite and this year did not disappoint! For weeks leading up to the race, eighth graders have been building their vessels in the classroom.

The Boat Float is an intensive project that combined science practices, engineering design and incredible creativity as students worked in small groups to create their own seaworthy boats constructed completely from recycled cardboard and duct tape.

Leading up to the Boat Float, students tested qualities such as humidity resistance, strength and flexibility of duct tape brands. To determine the best boat shape, they initially built smaller scale models. They also visited The Foundry, where they learned about rowing and sail boat hull shapes. (view photos from Boat Float).

Many boats made it across the pool, but only one boat made it across twice with the fastest time - the Swedish Fish, sailed by Angelina Lonardo ‘22  and Anna Wierup ’22! Congratulations to all the competitors!
