Doc Goel received more fantastic news about a previous Catalyst participant — Carter Richmond ’25 — who completed the Catalyst program in the summer of 2024. His team’s work has been published in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, and Carter is listed as a contributor!
Carter and his team worked in CWRU’s Two-Phase Flow and Thermal Management Lab on a project funded by NASA that looked at the boiling and condensation of cryogenic fluids and how they behave differently in space. Ultimately the research will be used by engineers to improve space shuttle design for long-duration space missions to ensure mission success and operational efficiency.
Today, Carter is in his first year at the University of Virginia, where is studying aerospace engineering, with a minor in business. He is on the Virginia Motorsports Formula SAE team, where he is a member of the aerodynamics subteam working on the front wing for their 2026 car. He also made UVA’s club golf team!
Asked about his Catalyst experience, Carter shared, “I received incredible research experience as a high school student. The lessons from interacting with graduate and post-doctorate researchers on a daily basis will be beneficial through my time at Virginia and beyond.” He added, “I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to get published and would like to thank the team at Case Western for including me as a contributor.”
