Girls Prep Hockey

This past weekend, the girls prep hockey team traveled to Buffalo, N.Y. to play three games, including two NAPHA League Prep games.

 

The first game against Nichols was a very exciting and evenly matched game. The Lancers got off to a quick start in the first period with Ani FitzGerald '19 scoring off an assist from Gretchen Klens '19 and Eli Turgeon '20. Maura McKeown '19 scored a goal with less than a minute left in the first on an assist from Ellie Heller '19. FitzGerald tallied her second goal in the second period with the assist from Franki Cappello '20. The third period was dominated by Nichols as they went on to tie the game at three. FitzGerald got a hat trick and scored her third and final goal of the night to give Gilmour the 4-3 advantage. The goal was assisted by Lexi Nguyen '20 and Klens. Nichols scored with less than a minute left off of a great play to end the game tied at four. Quinn Hartmetz '21 (pictured) and Jasmiina Vaatainen '19 both gave solid defensive efforts. 

 

In game two, the Lancers lost to the Buffalo Bison 3-1, but played an amazing, unified game. The first period went scoreless before Buffalo netted two goals in the second period. Fitzgerald netted a goal for GA early in the third to jump start the offense, but unfortunately Gilmour was unable to score again the remainder of the game. All around the girls played amazing both offensively and defensively. 

 

The final game of the weekend was a rematch against Nichols that again stalled in a tie, this time at one. Klens got the first goal in the first period before both teams battled it out in the second with GA maintaining the lead heading into the third. Nichols then scored its lone goal midway through the third. Kayleigh Geary '20 had an outstanding performance in net and Hartmetz and Bella Sprang '21 were a force back on defense. 

 

Weekend Plans: The Lancers travel to Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday and Syracuse, N.Y. on Sunday to play independent games.
