Girls Prep Hockey

This past weekend, the girls prep hockey team traveled to St. Catharines, Ontario to play in the Ridley College Exhibition. The Lancers played a total of four games against some of the toughest Tier I teams in Canada. The tournament set-up was slightly different than usual, in that the first three games were played with three full periods, followed by a shootout at the end. This gave teams experience for the future, and allowed a team the chance to win the game, but lose the shootout; or lose the game and win the shootout; or lose/win both.

In game one against Ridley College, it was a competitive first period and the Lancers were down 1-0 at its conclusion. The second period was even tougher, as Ridley scored five unanswered goals, and an additional two in the third. Gilmour ended regulation down 8-0, but gave a fantastic effort in the shootout, winning on a goal by captain Morgan Miller '19. Goalie Samara Walji '21 recorded a shutout in the shootout.

Game two against the Toronto Aeros was another tough game, but a good learning and playing experience for the team. The Lancers remained competitive, losing the game 3-0, before winning in the shootout with the lone goal scored by Lexi Nguyen '20. Goalie Julia Beaven '19 (pictured) had a shutout in the shootout.

Gilmour lost game three 6-2 to the Buffalo Bison, with its only goals coming in the third period by assistant captain Maura McKeown '19. The Lancers also lost the shootout, despite an incredible goal scored by Abby Zenone '19.

The Lancers ended the weekend on a high note, defeating the Ontario Hockey Academy (OHA) 1-0 in overtime. At the end of scoreless regulation, the Lancers played 3v3 for five minutes. Miller, Gretchen Klens '19 and Quinn Hartmentz '21 took the ice for the bonus period. Klens scored the game-winning goal within 31 seconds with an assist from both Miller and Hartmetz, giving the Lancers their lone victory for the weekend.
