Girls Track & Field Hope to Take Winning Ways Into Districts

The varsity girls track & field team began last week with an 85-43 win in a dual meet against Trinity. The Lancers won all four relays as well as nine individual events. The team then competed in the All-Catholic Championships. Bella Pignatiello '18 was third in a strong 800 field at 2:24 while Jorja Hlifka '20 had a season-best 2:30 to place sixth. Mackenzie Palinski '21 was third in discus with a new PR of 100' 9". Alannah Barton '19 had a new PR in the 3200 at 12:12 to place third. Ava Thomas '18 was second in the 200 with a solid :26, while Katie Engle '19 was third in a very competitive 1600 as Sophia Garofalo '21 took sixth with a season-best 5:42. Sophia Giancola '20 took fourth in the 100. The girls relays earned two first-place finishes in the 4x200 (Madison Olsen '20, Thomas, Annika Corcoran '19 and Lucia Cannata '18) and 4x100 (Giancola, Thomas, Corcoran and Cannata), and finished third in the 4x800 (Marisa Salvino '18, Izzy Greene '18, Barton, and Sophia Kless '21) and fourth in the 4x400 with a season-best 4:14 (Olsen, Pignatiello, Salvino and Cannata). The Lancers will now begin competing in the postseason, starting their quest for a state championship with the district meet this week at Cuyahoga Heights High School May 16-18.
 
In additional track news, Madison Olsen (pictured) was recognized this past week as the News-Herald Athlete of the Week for her outstanding efforts.
