Students Impress Guest Speaker with Depth of Spiritual Understanding

Recently, Mr. Ron Ironhorse, an ordained Wisdom Keeper for the Comanche Nation, joined Doc Vaughan’s Culture, Self and Connection class for a discussion of Native American religious tradition. During his visit, Mr. Ironhorse noted several times how amazed he was by the depth and sophistication of our students' theological questions and observations.

Here are a few examples of questions the students asked:
  • What can mainstream Americans (and maybe the world) learn from Native American ways of life?
  • Is it possible to create a society that combines the communal solidarity of Primal (spiritual) life with advanced industrial civilization? If it isn’t possible, what features of indigenous culture can people in industrial/high tech societies embrace?
  • Spiritually, what do you see as the biggest threat to today’s society?
  • Do you think blended homogeneous cultures are better than distinctive traditions and beliefs?
