A Visit to the Heart of the Action
Fourteen lucky seniors from the Constitutional Law and AP Government classes took their learning on the road as they ventured to Washington, D.C. for a firsthand look at some of the institutions they have studied in class. They began their trip with a visit to the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They then spent the afternoon at the Museum of African American History and Culture. As the sun set, the group walked the Mall to see the monuments, including the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam War Memorial.
The next day began with the opportunity to watch an entire Supreme Court hearing as the justices grappled with a free speech case and what the word "encourage" meant in the context of a particular immigration law. The group followed that up with a stop at one of the most beautiful buildings in Washington, the Library of Congress.
They then spent the afternoon touring the US Capitol Building and visiting with Rep. Dave Joyce, who answered the group’s questions about his role in Congress and the many challenges facing the country today. The evening was capped off watching the Washington Capitals beat the Winnipeg Jets in a NHL showdown at Capital One Arena.
During their final day in the nation’s capital, the group had the chance to tour the White House, where the students enjoyed seeing some of the historic rooms they’ve read so much about - the East Room, the Blue Room, and the State Dining Room. Before heading home, they made a brief stop at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, where they saw just a few of the myriad items in the museum that reflect our American experience, and then headed to the Washington Monument again, this time riding the elevator to the top to take in the best views of the entire District of Columbia.
