Gilmour Academy has been well known for its educational excellence since it was founded in 1946 by the Brothers of Holy Cross, and also more recently known for its athletic excellence within the past decade. Several of the Lancer teams have made trips to Columbus in order to compete for state championships.
For the first time in school history, the Boys Varsity Baseball team made it to the Division IV state semifinals in 2008. The team, led by junior Billy Urban and senior Chris Fagan, finished the season with a record of 25-5, breaking the school record for season wins. Entering the post-season, the team was ranked number 4 in the state. In the District competition, Gilmour defeated Newbury, Badger and Fairport Harbor for the championship. Advancing to the Regional semifinals, GA dispensed with Mapleton and Springfield, paving the way for the Lancers first shot at the state title in the history of the school. In the Division IV state semifinal game, Gilmour faced Berlin Hiland, who came in with a record of 28-3. Berlin took the lead, 1-2 after the first inning, but in the fourth inning Nate Campbell hit a triple and, after a walk and an error, GA led by a score of 3-2. After a rocky first inning, Cody Osburn sailed through the next five innings, holding Hiland to one hit; he even set down ten batters in a row. But, later in the game, after a couple of successful bunts, Hiland hit a single to score two runners and won the game by a score of 4-5. It was tough loss for the Lancers, but the team felt the support and excitement from the entire Gilmour Community.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team made a trip to the Division III regional semifinal game in 2009. The veteran team and the team chemistry on and off the court helped to carry the Lancers deep into the playoffs. They finished the season 20-6. The team lost a tough game to Regina 33-51 in the regional semifinals. In 2011, the Lancers had one of the most successful seasons in Gilmour history. They compiled an impressive record of 22 wins and 3 losses, which included going undefeated at home. The team made it to the sweet sixteen before a heart breaking loss to Elyria Catholic ending with a score of 46-48.
The Boys Varsity Basketball team was runners up in the Division IV basketball tournament in 1992. The Cinderella team was underdogs throughout the tournament and after an incredible battle with Berlin Hiland, lost in the championship with a score of 71-74.
In the last decade, the Girls Cross Country team has had many achievements with the highest being the Division III state champions in 2006 and state runners up in 2007. The team has competed in the state meet many times in recent years, including in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. The team has also been crowned regional champs in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and regional runners up in 2010. They were also district champions in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and district runners up in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, and 2010. Each year since 2006, Gilmour has sent runners to compete individually at the state competition. Most recently, Halle Markel '14 earned a fifth place individual finish.
The Boys Cross Country team
has had alot of success over the years. The team has competed in the state meet in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2001, and 2005. The team was crowned regional runners up in 1991 and 1992. They were crowned district champs in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006 and district runners up in 1989, 1993, 1995, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The Varsity Football team has a strong history of success. In recent years, the team has competed in several regional games including in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.
2010 Division III State Championship Gilmour Golf Team
The Golf Varsity team has made quite a name for itself, finishing among the top 11 teams in the state of Ohio in nine of the past 10 seasons. Most recently the team travelled to Columbus to compete in the 2011 Division III State Championship and for the third year in a row, a Gilmour golfer was named the individual state champion. Andrew Bieber '13 had a final score of 154 and the team finished strong in sixth place. Last year, the Lancers earned the 2010 Division III State Championship with senior Alex Andrews earning medalist honors for the second straight season. Andrews is only the 15th player to ever earn multiple individual state championships in Ohio, also winning as a junior in 2009.
Within this decade, the boys golf team has also earned other impressive state finishes of third place in 2008 and fourth place in 2003 and 2009. The Lancers won the individual state champion a total of four times within the 10-year time period, including Mike Trivisonno, who earned the honor as a junior in 2003, in addition to two-time champion Andrews and in 2011, Andrew Bieber. The Lancer golf team previously earned state championships in 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994.

The Boys Varsity A Hockey team has been in the Division I Final Four twice in the past four years (2008, 2011). In 2008, the team was the state runner up, and in 2011, the Lancers set a state record for most overtimes in a Final Four game, playing four in a 3-2 loss in the state semifinal game.
The Girls Swim team qualified six individuals to compete in the 2011 Division II state championships and earned its third top 10 team finish in the past eight seasons. Freshman Macie McNichols took second in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. As a team, the Lancers’ highest finish was in 2005 when it earned 6th place.
The Boys Swim team, Alex Lohiser earned Division II state runner-up diving honors as a sophomore in 2010 and finished in fourth place (the highest finish of any NE Ohio diver) as a junior in 2011. As a team, the Lancers finished 20th after sending six individual swimmers to compete in the state championship in 2011. This tied as the program’s highest finish on record with Gilmour also finishing 20th in 2005.
player Lauren Davis won the Division II state championship as a sophomore in 2008 and Ali Althans was a Division II state quarterfinalist as a junior in 2009.
Track & Field
The Girls Track & Field team
has won four Division III state championships during the past seven seasons (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009). The team also earned runners-up status in 2008 and 2010, while several student-athletes earned individual state championship honors those same years. Most recently, the team finished eighth in 2010 with top finisher freshman Halle Markel earning second place in the 3200-meter run.
The Girls Varsity Volleyball team has earned state runners-up honors in 2008 and 2010. The team was a state semifinalist in 2007 and a regional finalist in 2009.
