Middle School
Our 7th- and 8th- grade Middle School is an inclusive community that inspires our students in their quest for academic success, personal growth, spiritual awakening and their place in the world. Shared facilities and programming, including daily Convocation with the Upper School, integrate Middle School students fully into the Gilmour Community.
The Middle School curriculum promotes students’ academic mastery and critical thinking while continuing to develop their creativity and curiosity. Varied instructional approaches foster inventive thinking as students learn to navigate and connect with the world around them. For example, with the Physics Challenge they build an unsinkable boat made completely of cardboard and tape and take field trips to places near and far.
Middle schoolers follow a similar block schedule with that of the Upper School, providing time for in-depth academic focus and a smoother transition to high school. Enrichment is offered through early admission into Upper School math and world language courses.
Following independent school tradition, students are assigned an advisor who works with them individually on academic and social issues. Students reflect annually on their individual development through self-assessment presentations to their parents, teachers, and counselors.
Gilmour provides a safe place for students to explore issues of faith and morality in a hospitable Holy Cross atmosphere that welcomes and respects people of different beliefs and cultures. Through the Middle School service program, students fulfill the Gilmour mission to develop the competence to see and the courage to act in creating a more humane and just society through their work with the elderly and special-needs children.
