Prep Hockey Program Benefits
The boys prep hockey program at Gilmour Academy offers players the ability to gain a world-class independent school education while maximizing their hockey exposure by enabling them to compete at the prep school level as members of the Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL), as well as a USA Hockey Independent 18-U AAA Tier 1 team. Between these two portions of the schedule, players participate in approximately 55-65 games per season, allowing them to showcase their talents to the top Junior A programs and colleges/universities in the country while competing for their school with their peers.

Gilmour Academy’s hockey program features first-class amenities. Its ice arena features two rinks, a locker room, weight room, film-viewing area, athletic training room, shooting area and coaches’ offices - all under one roof. The amount of ice time available to Gilmour hockey program participants is incomparable to other programs. During the school year, both sheets of ice are in use and, during the summer months, one is kept running for maximum training opportunities and skill development. Players practice with their team daily and can get additional ice time for training/development opportunities.

The weight-training facility and video area feature all the necessary equipment for hockey-specific training and there is a strength and conditioning coach on staff. The guidance of the strength and conditioning coach, in conjunction with the expertise of the school’s athletic training staff, on topics such as nutrition, rehab/therapy and additional strength training, are great resources for the hockey program. In the film-viewing area, players learn by watching game/practice footage and utilize the film software HUDL, which allows players to create their own footage for personal development. All Gilmour Academy home games are streamed live to the school’s website, with the option to view at a later time as well.

The hockey program is led by four full-time hockey coaches on campus who serve as resources for skill development as well as guidance and mentorship in all areas of the independent school experience. Players are provided helmets with cages, gloves, bags, shells, practice/game jerseys and socks, tape, laces, mouth guards, skate sharpenings/rivet repairs, and equipment sanitizing with the O-ZONE machine. The team travels either by Gilmour Academy school bus or charter bus, depending on the length of the trip, and lodge/eat with each other on the road.

Boarding students live in a small dormitory community on campus. The dorm provides a nurturing, structured setting, overseen by the residential life staff, where players can live, study, socialize and eat in a setting conducive to academic and athletic success.
