Jami Austin '09

Head Junior Varsity Coach/Assistant Varsity Coach
1st Season (2014-15)

Jami Austin may be a first year coach with the Gilmour Academy girls basketball program, but she is quite familiar with the Lancer coaching philosophy, having played for 10th year head coach Bob Beutel. A 2009 graduate of Gilmour, she was a contributing member to the Lancer squads which went to the district finals in 2008 and the regionals in 2009 – the same year the team went on a 19-1 run to finish the season. Austin was a Lancer Award recipient for basketball and also received the school’s Dennis Hoynes Award for being an outstanding scholar athlete.

Austin holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and is a project engineer for The Lubrizol Corporation. The longtime Highland Heights, Ohio, native is engaged to Ed Pomnea. The couple will marry in September 2015.

Deborah Suba

Assistant Junior Varsity and Varsity Coach
1st Season (2014-15)

Deborah Suba is in her first year as an assistant coach with the Gilmour Academy girls basketball program, working with both the varsity and junior varsity teams.  She spent one season helping out on a part-time basis several years prior.

Her relationship with 10th year head coach Bob Beutel dates back to her playing days at Eastlake North High School when she earned All-Ohio honors for his regional qualifying Rangers. She also earned All-Ohio honors as a volleyball player before earning a scholarship to compete in the sport at Cleveland State University. While in college, she earned the Viking Award as the team’s most valuable player in 1986 and 1987, and was invited to try out for the United States National Team. She also was a member of CSU’s fastpitch team, earning the most valuable player award in 1987.

Suba earned a bachelor’s degree in art education and then later returned to Cleveland State to earn a master’s degree in administration. She became an art teacher at Perry High School and has held the position for 27 years. During that time, she was a 20-year head coach for the Pirate varsity volleyball team, a five-year head coach for the Perry Middle School volleyball team and a two-year assistant girls basketball coach at her alma mater, Eastlake North. Additionally, she spent 25 years as a Junior Olympic volleyball coach and served as the Perry Middle School athletic director from 2006-2014.

She is a 27-year member of the Ohio Education Association (OEA), a 25-year member of the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) and a 20-year member of the Ohio High School Coaches Association. She currently resides in Painesville Township, Ohio.
